Warrior 10 Mile Race
It wasn’t until about 2 days before the Warrior 10 Mile race that I decided to register. Team Health Shoppe was supposed to receive a discount code for the race, but it did not work the few times I tried it. I emailed the team manager who advised I contact the race director. The race director fixed whatever was happening on the back end of the website and the discount code worked, so I registered! I carpooled to the race location, about 45 minutes or so from where I live, with one of my training partners, Brent. Brent had finished 2nd at the Warrior 10 Mile race in 2016! The Warrior 10 Mile race took place on March 11, 2017.
I’m pleased with my performance at the Warrior 10 Mile race.
Based on the previous year results, I set the expectation within my mind that I should be able to finish within the top three overall. I had not run in the area where the Warrior 10 Mile race was being held, but I heard it was an out and back course with many rolling hills.
The race started and there was one other person I was running next to for the first mile and a half. Once we settled into pace, which was about 6:15 pace the first mile as it was downhill, I asked him if he was doing the 10 or the 5 since there was the 10 mile race and a 5k race. He said he was doing the 5k, so I was pretty stoked. The turn around point for the 5k came and then I was running all by myself.
I technically did have a bike escort and a motorcycle cop in front of me, but they didn’t talk to me, so running solo was a little tough. There were a few hills within the first half of the race that were tough. When I made around at the 5 mile mark, the cop and the bike escort stopped, so I was running on my own at that point. I saw second place about a minute or so after the turn around point and it was my friend, Brent! I congratulated him and ran on. Since it was an out and back course, I tried to make sure to congratulate all the runners and walkers on how they were doing. That helped take my mind off some of the hills that I had to run up to get back to the start.
I ended up crossing the line in FIRST PLACE! My friend and training partner, Brent, finished SECOND overall, too! The finishing times were a little off for everyone, as my watch said 63 minutes and change, as I started it when I crossed the mat at the start and then at the finish. However, the time the race posted was about a minute and a half slower than the time on the watch. Brent and a few others noticed this discrepancy, too Not a big deal. Since I finished FIRST OVERALL, I earned a free entry to 2018’s event and a large wooden plaque, too! I’ll be there as long as it does not interfere with any of the main KTC event races!
I ran in the following items at the Warrior 10 Mile Race:
Shoes: Altra The One Yellow and Black running shoes. Altra has made my list for the best zero drop running shoes. The Altra “The One” is a lightweight shoe made for running fast with light cushioning. So far, I’m very excited about how they’ve performed at the races so far in 2017 and I hope to race in these for many longer distance type races to come.
Running Socks: Ever since 2011, any time I have decided to race, I’ve almost always run in Injinji socks. They’ve always been phenomenal for me and thus far, I’ve had no blister issues with them regardless of distance and pace. Injinji socks are some of the best running socks!
Beanie: Since it was cold out, I ran in my SWORD beanie! I love the beanie and am glad to represent such a great company. Running Singlet: Right before the Strawberry Plains Half Marathon I was picked up by one of the local running teams in the greater Knoxville area, Team Health Shoppe. Team Health Shoppe is presented by Eddie’s Health Shoppe and Podium Sports Medicine. Even though this was not technically a team race for the KTC series, I still wore my Team Health Shoppe singlet since there was a team discount.
Running Shorts: I decided to opt out of the complete Smurf blue on blue and go a different route. As seen in the pictures from this race, I’m wearing a sky blue colored pair of shorts. They’re not technically real running shorts, just short shorts in a color I really like. I wore some compression shorts underneath to aid in warmth and prevent things from moving around while running.
Running Watch: I used my Garmin Forerunner 310XT, which is still kicking and holding strong, regardless of being probably 10 years old! It’s definitely one of the best Garmin watches available STILL, even as old as it is. I am looking to eventually get something a little newer, like a Garmin 235, which some of my running partners have.
